Congregational and Community Care
But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” ~ Matthew 20:25-28

Goal: Serve The Transition Needs Of Our Congregation And Our Community
Caring ministries at Great Falls UMC focus on supporting those in our congregation and community during life’s transitions. We currently offer Stephen Ministry, Visitation Ministry, Care Circles, United Methodist Men & Women, and host Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
STEPHEN MINISTRY
Stephen Ministers are trained Christian caregivers meeting the needs of individuals experiencing difficult life transitions. They are not counselors. Their role is to listen and care—not counsel or advise. Stephen Ministry is a supervised ministry. Stephen Ministers engage in twice-monthly supervision to ensure that they are providing the best-quality Christian care. Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry. What a care receiver tells a Stephen Minister remains confidential. Even in supervision, the names of care receivers and specific details are never discussed. Stephen Ministers do not make cold calls. They are assigned only to people who agree to receive the care of a Stephen Minister.
If you think you, or someone you know, could benefit from a Stephen Minister, please talk with Karen Deaton, our Stephen Leader (deatonkaren76@gmail.com) or Pastor Dore (703-759-3705 or livingstonedore@vaumc.org). All requests are totally confidential.
VISITATION MINISTRY
Members of the congregation, proactively visit members of the congregation who are unable to get out, in the hospital or in rehabilitation.
CARE CIRCLES
Different small groups in the church "adopt" someone who is experiencing a life transition and stays in contact with them via cards, calls and prayers.
UNITED METHODIST MEN
United Methodist Men meet for a Pot Luck dinner the third Thursday of each month during the school year to fellowship and plan projects. The UM Men provide support to the church and its community in a variety of ways. They raise funds for projects through the Church’s Annual Bazaar held in October; hold a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner that benefits the Society of St. Andrew; among other activities.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
United Methodist Women are a very dedicated part of Great Falls UMC. Strong support is given to the church, the local community, and the Arlington District United Methodist Women. In fact, our group has been a six-star contributor to the categories of Undesignated Giving for the Arlington District for several years. Great Falls UMW has three active Circles and holds general meetings during the year to plan activities for fund raising for missions as well as for the entire Church Family -- including the Annual Bazaar and Dinner each October, Christmas Family Program & Potluck, Cake Auction and Cake Walk, Community Yard Sale, to mention a few.
HOSPITALITY
The Hospitality Coordinator organizes with church members in the planning for church events and for receptions following funerals/memorial services.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
